At the present, the big tech buzz surrounding Samsung pertains to its flagship Galaxy S4, which will be unveiled in New York City on March 14. That doesn’t mean the tech press has been silent about the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung’s third-generation phablet and successor to the popular 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2.
The Korea Times reported this week that according to an unnamed Samsung employee, Samsung will be working on the Galaxy Note 3, a device that will feature a 5.9-inch display with OLED, and not AMOLED technology. Not much else was said about the Note 3, but previous rumors have tipped other screen sizes, such as 5.8 inches and 6.3 inches, with 1080p display resolution being a very strong possibility. As most of today’s high-end smartphones come with 1920 x 1080 display resolution, it may be imperative for Samsung to continue this trend with the Galaxy Note 3.
We’ll have to go back to older Galaxy Note 3 rumors for the rest on what could be featured on this phone/tablet combination, as once again, the anonymous Samsung representative was short on specs-related details. These older rumors suggest that Samsung will be using its eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor on the Galaxy Note 3. If so, and if the Galaxy S4 features a Snapdragon 600 under the hood, then the Galaxy Note 3 may be the first handset to be powered by the Exynos 5 Octa, a processor based on ARM big.LITTLE architecture. Features of the Note 3 may include a thinner bezel to allow better use of the space up front, not to mention a more comfortable feel in one hand.
According to the Korea Times’ “mystery” insider, the Galaxy Note 3 is expected to be released in the second half of 2013; this makes sense if Samsung is planning to go by an 11-12 month life cycle and unveil the Note 3 at IFA 2013 this August, with a release to follow about a month or two thereafter.l
