The emerging smartphone-maker unwrapped its latest efforts to an
expectant crowd at this week’s annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las
Vegas, as it became the latest manufacturer to join what’s fast becoming a
battleground for big screen mobile devices.
Although technically a smartphone, Ascend Mate, is essentially a
small tablet – or phablet, if you will, with its colossal 6.1-inch display,
rocking a 720p HD resolution and ‘Magic Touch’ support that means it can be
used even with gloves on.
Elsewhere there’s an eight-megapixel shooter, 1.5GHz quad core
processor and an array of connectivity options, including 4G LTE support and a
dual Wi-Fi receiver for speeds of up to 150Mbit/s.
Next up is the Ascend D2, featuring a smaller and yet
still-massive huge five-inch display with a full HD (1080p) resolution and an
impressive 443 pixels per inch, plus Gorilla Glass protection.
Powering matters here is a 1.5GHz quad-core SoC developed
in-house, with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of on board storage and a 13-megapixel primary
camera that records videos in 1080p.
Finally, we have the Ascend W1 - Huawei’s first handset to run
the latest operating system from Microsoft, albeit packing a decidedly more
modest spec sheet that includes a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a
four-inch WVGA display and a five-megapixel rear snapper.
Although Huawei has not given any concrete release dates yet,
the Ascend Mate and the Ascend D2 are both expected to be available globally by
March, while the Ascend W1 will land sometime in Q1.
Pricing details are as yet
unknown, but these are likely to be revealed closer to launch. Keep ‘em
