Samsung’s next flagship smartphone may not be as ‘nature-inspired’ as its forebear, but it will be more nature-friendly at least, as it emerges that the Galaxy S4 will rock greener display technology.
According to the well-informed types at SamMobile, the Galaxy S4 will introduce a new AMOLED material called “green PHOLED” that uses a yellow-green colour combo to make for a more energy-efficient display.
To give you the science, PHOLED - short for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes - uses the principle of phosphorescence for a near perfect internal quantum efficiency compared to around 75 per cent on the more commonly used fluorescent OLEDs.
This means a PHOLED panel on the Galaxy S4 could reduce power consumption by up to a quarter, which will be boon if the S4 really features a 4.99-inch full HD display with a 441 ppi density as has been rumoured for the last few months.
In addition to PHOLED, the Galaxy S4 screen is also mooted to feature a so-called ‘floating touch’ technology similar to the Sony Xperia Sola that landed last year.
This will purportedly enable users to preview content – say photos or calendar events – without actually touching the screen.
Samsung is due to officially announce the Galaxy S4 this Thursday at an Unpacked press event in New York.
Aside from a bigger, better screen, the hotly anticipated smartphone is also expected to debut Samsung’s new eight-core Exynos processor and a 13-megapixel camera.
