When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S IV last night, it was a bit vague on one important detail: what processor will its new flagship smartphone use. This is because it will vary by country.
The official spec sheet says "1.9GHz Quad-Core Processor / 1.6GHz Octa-Core Processor. The selection of AP will be differed by markets."
According to unconfirmed reports, most of the world is going to get a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor running at 1.6GHz, but in the U.S. the Galaxy S IV is going to be built around a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chip.
Although the Qualcomm processor will have a higher clock speed, the Exynos will have twice as many processor cores.
This change is allegedly related to support for 4G LTE networks. Modern processors save space by including the cellular-wireless modem in the chip. Variations in LTE networks around the globe can therefore lead to devices needing different processors.
