Just what devices are worthy to be listed among the Top 5smartphones of the first quarter of 2013? Q1 2013 may not be over yet, but with one week remaining before Samsung’s Galaxy S4 launch, it was but timely for respected tech blog Gotta Be Mobile to rank its Top 5 smartphones as of March, a list that featured the LG/Google Nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z and Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
Topping the charts was the LG/Google Nexus 4, which made first honors despite not coming with 4G LTE support. As expected, Gotta Be Mobile praised the Nexus 4 as a vanilla Android device, and the fact that Nexus 4 owners get Android updates sooner than others, due to its being a flagship Google device. Unlocked pricing was seen as another strength – the 8 GB version costs only $299 unlocked, less than half the price of an iPhone 5. Some argue that the Nexus 4 falls flat due to a lack of microSD support, but if you’ll ask most consumers, 8 GB or 16 GB is more than enough storage space anyway.
The Top 3 also featured the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 at second and the HTC One at third. The Note 2 made second despite having been out in North America since October, as Gotta Be Mobileremains impressed with its jumbo 5.5-inch screen, quad-core processor and S Pen stylus. The One drew raves not just for its 4.7-inch, 1080p display, but also for its premium metal design, the new HTC Sense 5.0 user interface and promising Ultrapixel rear camera.
The Sony Xperia Z finished fourth despite its water-resistant qualities, 5-inch, 1080p display and 13-megapixel rear camera, most likely owing to its lack of 4G LTE support in the United States. And finally, Motorola’s Droid RAZR Maxx HD bagged fifth place on account of its 3,300 mAh battery, Kevlar design and improved software support
