Samsung Adds Galaxy Note 8.0 to its Expanding Tablet Range

Samsung’s tablet range is getting bigger all the time, and at Mobile World Congress over the weekend it announced another new addition to the family – theGalaxy Note 8.0. It’s not much of a surprise, as the tablet has been rumoured for a while, with even Samsung‘s CEO joining in with the leaking a few weeks ago, when he confirmed the slate would arrive at MWC.
So now it’s here, what have we got. As you’ve probably guessed, the screen size is 8-inches, making it a couple of inches smaller than the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, but just 0.1-inches larger than its prime competitor – the Apple iPad Mini. The resolution is higher than the iPad Mini, at 1280 x 800; a figure it shares with the Galaxy Note 10.1. This has the added benefit of the screen looking ever-so slightly sharper.
Google Android 4.1.2 is installed along with TouchWiz, and it’s powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 4 Quad processor which has a 1.6GHz clock speed and is ably assisted by 2GB of RAM. The tablet will come with either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage space, plus there is a microSD card slot ready to give it a boost. Other features include Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, Wi-Fi and an Infrared sensor to turn the tablet into a universal remote control.
The standout feature of any piece of hardware with the Note name is the S-Pen stylus, and sure enough it’s hidden away in a slot on the side of the Note 8.0. It can be used in almost all apps and situations on the tablet, including on the standard Android buttons, and Samsung has opened up its abilities to developers. This should see the stylus being integrated into more apps, starting with news app Flipboard, which comes pre-installed on the tablet.
Samsung hasn’t given a price or an exact release date for the Galaxy Note 8 yet, saying only that it’ll be out during the second quarter this year, so expect it to be on the shelves before June.
