Details of the third edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note have surfaced online. And it sounds like it’s going to stretch the already-narrowing dividing line between phablets and tablets to breaking point.
According to an unnamed insider cited by Korea Times, the Galaxy Note 3’s centrepiece will be a vast 5.9-inch AMOLED display. That’s the best part of half-an-inch larger than the current-gen model, which packs a 5.55-inch screen.
The source, who we imagine was working as a shoeshine boy at a railway station when he imparted the sensitive gen, said: ''Samsung is working on introducing a new phablet using a 5.9-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen.”
The device, which earlier leaks suggests will feature the same eye motion-sensitive controls, the Galaxy S3, will also purportedly feature Samsung’s meaty new octa-core processor, apparently “to meet consumer demand for faster data processing and downloading speeds”.
What very much won’t be on board when the phone lands in the second half of the year, however, is the much-rumoured flexible screen technology that Samsung has been developing. This is apparently because Samsung’s display affiliate is “having difficulty coping with demand”.
Flexible tech is also thought to have been hampered by manufacturing challenges and low yields that mean it is commercially unviable right now.
Unveiled last September, the Galaxy Note 2 has raced to more than ten million sales worldwide, spurred by a series of high-profile, Apple-baiting TV ads and burgeoning consumer demand for larger handsets.
